INTRODUCING THE UK’S FIRST ROAMING POP-UP CINEMA: THE NOMAD

Lexi Cinema presents The Nomad is an exciting new roaming pop-up cinema experience set to tour London, the South East and beyond. Throughout 2011, The Nomad will be bringing films to life in beautiful and unexpected locations both indoor and out, from castles to theatres, ballrooms to churches, via award-winning parks, country estates and many other stunning locations – supported by headline sponsor Saab.

The Nomad’s carefully programmed film events will celebrate and enhance each venue along the way.  Showing an inspiring and eclectic range of films from classics, cult and noir, to mainstream guilty pleasures, there will be something for everyone. Often inspired by the setting, selected films will also regularly feature insightful introductions, theatre and/or live music to help set the scene and add extra magic to the cinema experience.

Picture the scene: it’s a warm summer’s evening, the sun is setting, the wine is flowing, and you’re surrounded by film-loving friends. You’re excited to re-experience a favourite film, or to discover a classic for the first time: in the beauty of the open air, under a starry sky and in the most picturesque location. Sit back, relax and let The Nomad treat you to a cinema experience you’ll never forget.

Lexi Cinema founder and The Nomad co-founder, Sally Wilton explains, “The birth of a new company is always a thrilling time and Lexi Cinema presents The Nomad is going to be a blast, driven by Saab and fuelled by the extraordinary hard work of a fantastic team made up of artists and creatives, marketeers, technical whizzes and social entrepreneurs.  We are looking forward to an amazing 2011 season of wonderful films in the most exciting, interesting and downright quirky venues. With an eclectic mix from Cinema Paradiso to The Wizard of Oz, each event is an experience to be savoured and remembered.  For The Lexi this is a dream come true, taking film out on the road to our public, having one hell of a good time and raising money for charity, life doesn’t get much better than that.”

The Nomad will set off on its adventure around the end of April from a London location. Venues confirmed so far include Battersea Park, Fulham Palace, Opera Holland Park, Leeds Castle, Richborough Roman Fort, Lulworth Castle, Kings College Chapel, Bodiam Castle, Lympne Castle, Queens Park, Roundwood Park and Scotney Castle with many more in the pipeline.   With creative programming at the heart of The Nomad, you can expect the films to be enhanced by their settings and added production.  At Fulham Palace, imagine yourself as part of the Court of Louis XV, while a string quartet brings Dangerous Liaisons to life; revisit cult movie The Omen, surrounded by frantic priests, iron spikes and 666 birthmarks; or be treated to Some Like It Hot with a live jazz band and many Marilyns. Full listings details will be announced soon.

Unable to wait until April when the full season begins?  The Nomad is running away to the Circus for a taster series from March.  They’re kicking off their exciting adventure at one of the nation’s favourite touring circus productions, Zippos. In a move that evokes pure nostalgia for all the senses, The Nomad is the first cinema to tour with the circus and will present a programme of movies that complement the thrill and showmanship you’d expect from a visit to the Big Top. Appearing on Sunday evenings, after the ringmaster takes his final bow, the Big Top will be transformed by The Nomad into a cinema with a difference.

The Nomad is an exciting new company founded this year through the merging of The Screen On The Green - the UK’s largest producer of open-air cinema and The Lexi Cinema, one of London’s finest independent cinemas, which gives 100% of its profits to a foundation in South Africa.  Together they have formed The Nomad.

With backing from Saab, The Nomad is able to produce an experience above and beyond the usual pop-up cinema screening.  To celebrate their partnership, The Nomad and Saab will be presenting the Independent Thinking film season. More details about this season of exceptional films to follow.

So we welcome you to follow The Nomad on its adventures into an enchanting landscape of intrigue and enlightenment as it presents a new way to experience cinema.

The Nomad was founded in Summer 2010 by The Lexi Cinema owner Sally Wilton and The Screen On The Green Managing Director (and sometime Actor, Theatre and Panto producer) George Wood.  Having collaborated on a mini-season of cinema alfresco events for The Lexi in 2010, the two decided to combine forces and create the country’s first year-round roaming cinema.

George Wood say’s "Along with our fantastic team, I am thrilled to be launching The Nomad - a pop up cinema with a difference!  The challenge of bringing great films to unique and challenging places has occupied my life for the past few years and now it feels that with The Nomad all the components are in place - the technical expertise, the best venues in the country and a fabulous headline sponsor in "Saab".  The 2011 season is set to be unforgettable so I am urging every one I meet to join the Nomad and come along for the ride!  For me personally, running The Screen On the Green for the past few years has given me an insight into just how passionate people are about both film and their local green spaces - combining the two with cinema under the stars has let us tap into that passion.  This is something that with The Nomad we aim to do on an even larger scale (while still retaining the personal touch that sets us apart from the experience of a multiplex!).  We want people to feel as passionate about our events as we do."

The Lexi Cinema
The Lexi Cinema in Kensal Rise is the UK’s first social enterprise boutique cinema, donating 100% of its profits to charity and staffed predominantly by local volunteers.  Founded in 2008, The Lexi has built up a reputation for programming bespoke film events sprinkled with added value including celebrity introductions, goodie bags, treasure hunts, half-time shots of whiskey, massive remote controls, and many other ingenious bits of mischief. Local guerrilla marketing campaigns keep the people of Queens Park and Kensal Rise on their toes.  The Lexi launched a membership scheme in Nov 2010, which has proved extremely popular for a small independent cinema, if not only for their lovely Oyster card wallets that they come in. The Lexi’s excellent value for money wines have been hand picked by Tony Laithwaite himself (owner of Laithwaites Wines).  Those that have tried the Malbec will testify!

Saab
Saab Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget  (Swedish Aircraft Company) was founded in 1937 as an aircraft manufacturer and revealed its first prototype passenger car 10 years later after the formation of the Saab Car Division. In 1990, Saab Automobile AB was created as a separate company, jointly owned by the Saab Scania Group and General Motors, and became a wholly-owned GM subsidiary in 2000. In February 2010, Spyker Cars N.V. of the Netherlands, acquired the company from GM as an independently run business.

Saab cars reflect the brand’s unique Scandinavian design ethic, which is fused with its aircraft engineering heritage. The company is a global premium car maker with a distinguished history of innovation. It is recognized for its pioneering role in turbocharging, as well as occupant safety and the introduction of flex-fuel technology through Saab BioPower. Saab Automobile AB currently employs approximately 3,800 staff in Sweden, where it operates world-class production and technical development facilities at its headquarters in Trollhättan, 70 km north of Gothenburg.

"Saab is delighted to support The Nomad pop-up cinema adventure in 2011. The Nomad is an exciting and engaging new way to experience cinema and aligns well with Saabs own culture of challenging convention, so we’re pleased to be involved in this innovative new venture.”
